ABOUT ME

"How Gramma Apple Got Her Name"

The name "Gramma Apple" began with my little brother. When we were yet toddlers, he could not pronounce my name April. So for a few years, I was "Apple".

Then I grew up, and acquired a taste for a kitchen décor with apples. It seems only fitting, even though I am not much of a baker and seldom bake an apple pie. The apple of my eye in this case, is actually eye candy.

Apples say home to me. They are bright and cheery, welcoming and sweet; just like home.

Then I grew up, and out, and now resemble that coveted fruit. Ironic?

After my grandchildren came along, they needed a way to differentiate their 6 grammas. Three great grandmothers are still living and involved in their lives. Two grammas are now cherished by them, and a step gramma as well. Each have their own Gramma name.

I became "Gramma Apple".

I wanted to instill the same love of reading that I have, into my grand-kiddies. I wanted a love they wouldn't lose; despite the lure of game boys, tv and various other electronic toys. It is a challenging goal. While they were yet in pre-school, I looked for creative ways to keep their attention.

I presented "Gramma Apple, the Storyteller" to them and to the other children in their child-care facility.

It worked.

5 or 6 grandchildren not my own greet me with cries of "Gramma Apple is here!" and, "Who is that weird lady changing clothes in the kitchen?"

Several pairs of jammy hands pry me free from the big comfy chair.

I enjoy it immensely. I began presenting this wacky apple lady to other children's groups. I continue to do so occasionally. Yes, I do go in costume, wearing an apron adorned in hand-painted apples, carrying a matching tote, wearing special reading glasses with no lenses, and a stray curler in my hair to remind the kiddies of their own gramma. Today's Grammas don't wear frumpy housedresses, floppy garden hats or hair nets. But, oh, I do wear my great big fuzzy bunny slippers.

Now you know these things about me:
I decorate by theme.
I don't bake much.
I'm not like my grandmother.
I'm short, round, sweet/tart and have shiny red cheeks.
I love reading.
I love my grandchildren and anyone's grandchildren more than reading.
I love to teach reading.
I can make a fool of myself in public without dying of shame.
I am a ham.
I am definitely not conventional.
I am not gainfully employed. (well, almost not)

Please know that I am also the beloved child of God, covered with grace by His son Jesus Christ. Gramma Apple is eager to tell you more about her very best friend. Did you know He is a mighty king? He has the power over life and death, and can heal broken hearts. He guides me and helps me like a Heavenly Father, and has crossed off every wrong thing I ever did because he loves me. I'm going to live with Him in His kingdom someday!
