Welcome! We are special people in our children's and grandchildren's lives. God made us so. No-one else can fulfill the role we've been given. One of our greatest concerns is not only their physical and emotional health, but the health of their souls.

This column is for you - if you're a grandparent. It's a place for heart to heart talks about your concerns, your blessings and your joy! Tell us how you connect with your grandchildren, and build a connection for them with Christ Jesus.

"LESSONS LEARNED FROM MY GRANDCHILDREN"
"Wise Choices"
By Jeanne Martin

Our oldest granddaughter, Kyleigh, recently invited us to attend their "Grandparent's Day" Lunch at school. When was the last time you ate lunch at the local elementary school cafeteria? It had been many years for us. We were thrilled with the invitation. We got there early, found our darling granddaughter and marched in line to the cafeteria.

We had ordered our lunch ahead of time, and her mom paid for it. Over the phone it sounded yummy, chicken sandwiches. But, as fate would have it, we had a fried chicken patty (institutional style) and a bun. We also had a choice of side dishes, brown beans and pineapples. What a combo.

Kyleigh politely ordered both sides along with her sandwich. She ate exactly ˝ of each dish and ˝ of her sandwich. When I asked her about it, she stated that she needed to make wise choices. She is allowed to turn down any sides. So why did she even order the sides if she wasn't going to eat them? I told her I didn't know she liked brown beans, and she said, "I don't like these brown beans. But I need to make healthy choices."

I have thought about that conversation since our excursion. Wise choices are sometimes hard to make. We choose the easy path; couch potato is easier than exercising. Grabbing a bag of chips is easier than preparing a healthy snack. Speeding through a yellow light is easier than stopping and waiting for the next green light. Sleeping an extra 15 minutes is easier than going to bed earlier and getting up for my devotions. How often I make unwise choices with many things. I admire Kyleigh's attitude at such an early age. Reversing roles as the Being the student as of my grandchildren teach, brings much insight. I pray I keep learning.

Lord, please help me make wise choices in everything I do. "May all I say and do today honor you in every way." Thank you for teaching me such important lessons from my grandbabies. I learn something new everyday…

Proverbs 23:19
"Listen, my son (and daughter), and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path." NIV
